Researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute in La Jolla, California, announced that they have created a cell with what they consider to be the minimal number of genes necessary for a free-living organism – 473. The bacterial ‘mini-me’, named syn3.0, has a genome that was synthesized in the lab by stitching together individual pieces of DNA. The Venter research team originally began work on this project in 2010, when they injected a synthetic genome into a Mycoplasma mycoides bacterium that had had its original genetic material removed. On 11 February 2016, scientists from the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) announced that they had detected gravitational waves originating from the collision of two huge black holes 1.3 billion years ago. According to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, gravity is produced when matter warps the shape of the surrounding space. LIGO’s breakthrough detectors are able to distinguish these ripples in the space-time continuum as they travel through the universe at the speed of light. This sexually transmissible, mosquito-borne virus has been determined to cause a number of severe birth defects, such as microcephaly. New Vision recently ran an article celebrating East Africa’s first large solar power plant in Soroti, Uganda. A new solar plant in Soroti District is set to supply 10 megawatts to Uganda’s electrical grid. This clean, sustainable energy is expected to power to about 40,000 homes in the area, which has heretofore lacked a reliable source of electricity. Teso College Aloet won two cups at the 3rd annual Science and Technology Innovation Challenge, held in 2015. TCA's Science and Technology Innovation Club (STIC) - commonly known as the Robotics Club - won best in the Eastern region and 3rd place overall with their automatic tyre changing system. The students of the club were also given certificates and an opportunity for industrial training in Kiira Motors Uganda. Saturday is always the most relished day in the week as far as Teso College Aloet is concerned. The ecstasy begins on Friday after preps, when the weekend mood is rated at 95%. Students stay awake, telling stories and entertaining themselves, until midnight when they retire to their respective beds. From 6.00am to 9.30am, students are engaged in the general cleaning of the school and their respective dormitories.
