Teso College Aloet embarks on pine farming
At Teso College Aloet, the school lies on over 1000 acres of land, with three quarters of the land, having a huge potential for crop and animal farming. Well the school has planted over 20,000 pine trees on a 200 acre of land and they hope that they will increase the acreage to cover the whole school.
They hope to become self-reliant. Headmaster Sylvester Ocaatum argues that they will use it for timber to make furniture for the school as well as sell the surplus to make some cash for the school. The school could also develop crop and animal farming to increase its income as well as hire out its Bus. According the school, they could make about sh3 billion annually if the school’s resources are exploited. But what is holding them back? According to Ocaatum, they need some grants from the government or donors to develop their ventures, through purchase of seedlings, tractors and farm implements. Ocaatum believes that if all this is done, the school will never face shortages in resources again. “The sky will be the limit. Performance will increase and everyone will work hard,” he explains.
